We encourage all students who suspect or have experienced hazing to report these acts to the university. By alerting us to an incident of hazing, our staff can work to support student organizations and individuals through educational efforts that address and aim to end hazing. To best address a situation, we ask for as much information as possible in a report. By reporting hazing concerns, you are helping VCU create a safer and healthier community.
If you have immediate safety concerns for yourself or another member of the VCU community, please call VCU Campus Police immediately at 804-828-1234.
What information should be included in the report?
The Hazing Reporting Form walks reporters through a series of questions to help capture as much information as possible regarding the alleged incident. VCU can best address an incident of hazing when we are provided with detailed information. Helpful information includes:
Name of the organization and/or individuals involved
Relationship to the organization/people involved
When the incident occurred
Location of the incident
Names of who was present or would have additional information about the incident
Specific details of the incident
Can a report be submitted anonymously?
VCU strongly encourages reporters to provide their contract information so we can connect you with resources and ask additional questions about the information you shared. It’s important to note your information will not be shared with the alleged individual or student organization. Personal identifying information is anonymized in documentation provided to the alleged individual or student organization.
However, individuals can submit a report anonymously using the Hazing Reporting Form. Individuals can also report anonymously to the National Anti-Hazing Hotline at (888) 668-4293.
What resources are available to me as a reporter?
If you or someone you know has experienced hazing or have been impacted by hazing, please know there are resources available to you. VCU offers mental health support for students who have experienced hazing or have been affected by hazing.
If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please dial 911. You may also connect with a crisis clinician 24/7 by calling 804-828-6200.
For non-emergencies, please consider utilizing the services provided by University Counseling Services (USC). USC provides individual and group counseling sessions as well as referrals to resources within the greater Richmond community. Students also have access to TimelyCare, which offers free 24/7 virtual care services, including crisis support, scheduled counseling, and virtual appointments with a certified health coach.
Additional support such as no contact directives and follow-up meetings can be provided by the Dean of Student Advocacy Office. To be connected with someone from DOSA, please complete the Request for Assistance form.
What about retaliation?
